news

Many of you have recently called and been concerned about the situation here. Since Independence was declared last week, there have been many protests and riots in Serbia. These are all far away from where I am, and I do not need to travel anywhere near there for my trip home. I had to travel a bit in this country over the last couple days and everything is calm. At the moment there is nothing to fear.

For those that don't know, I will be in the states from February 29th until March 11th. I will be in Massachusetts staying with my brother (and especially my nephew) for most of the time, but will be in Nashville for the weekend of March 8/9. I would love to see whoever is around. Just send me an email and we can try to work things out.

The birth of a new country

This country is now 7 days old. They have survived a whole week. Now what? Some flags are still flying high, some people are still greeting each other with congratulations, the news is still about Independence, but lives have gone on.

Independence was declared on a Sunday, and Monday was a day off for almost everyone. For those two days the streets were crowded and much celebrating occurred. Little traveling bands wandered the streets and went in and out of coffee shops. There was dancing and singing everywhere you went.

Now the conversation has turned to the history of what these people have been through to finally get to this point. They suffered a lot. They waited a long time. They shed a lot of blood and tears. Finally the day has come. Finally they have their own country. Finally they have a name to call themselves. Finally they have real passports. Finally they will be able to participate in international events as who they really are, no longer under another country. It is an exciting time.

It is also an uncertain time. There are still many countries that have not yet recognized this country’s independence. The country that used to have power over this land is not relinquishing it easily. Although their people no longer live here they still want claim to it. Their people are protesting in their capital and around the city. They have burned embassies, destroyed stores, and knocked down border crossings.

Why do people fight over land so much? Why do people want claim to a land they are no longer living in? Why do people get upset when countries split up when they were often put together by officially living somewhere else? I admit that I am not a history buff, although I am trying to read more the longer I am here in Europe, but I don’t understand how you can put different nationalities together, draw border lines for one country around them, and expect them to be all happy under one law, one flag, and one government. No wonder there is so much fighting and the worry of break-away states. Everyone wants their own freedom and their own identity.

(I typed this sitting outside on my friend’s porch in a small village. Life is good and I am enjoying this warm weather before I head to snowy New England at the end of this week.)

newborn

"Newborn" kind of became the theme for some of the celebrations here on Independence day. See this website for a blog about the events that have gone on here. I was able to sign the huge NEWBORN letters that you see on today's blog post.

Vendi Im - my place

This is a video that was created for Independence. It gives me chills every time I listen to it. The title, "Vendi Im," means "My place." Its exciting that the people of Kosova now have their own place.

Urime Pavarsia

Kosova is officially a country! Just minutes ago the Prime Minister declared independence. I can not even describe my emotions right now. I have lived here for the past 4 1/2 years and grown very attached to these people and this country. I am beyond excited about this moment in history.

Wednesday, February 13

So I postponed my trip two weeks. I just couldn't miss out on what is hopefully going to happen here. Please continue to pray. I am sad I won't see my nephew in two days...but I am happy I will be able to celebrate here.

Monday, February 11

I love that when I empty my recycle bin on my computer I hear two of my friends singing "Don't throw your trash in my back yard."

I am getting very excited to see my nephew in just a couple more days. But at the same time I am sad that I will not be here for a big day in history....hopefully. More about that after it comes. For now, please just pray for the people here and that there will be peace.

movies

Yes, I know I have too much work to do and I shouldn't be looking for movies online, but I have found a great website. My cable really stinks these days, so I am always looking for new ways to watch some good movies. I just heard about this site from a friend. You can download movies for about 3 dollars each, seems legal and everything, and you get to keep the movies, not just watch them once.

So everyone enjoy watching your movies. Click here to go to the site.

PS. Please leave your recommendation of your favorite movie or any good movies you have seen recently. I miss out on hearing about the good movies, being overseas.

spring is in the air

I am loving the warm weather we are having here right now...but at the same time I am missing winter. I was excited that we would have a real winter when the snow was falling in the beginning of December. But it didn't last much through the beginning of the new year. It was bitterly cold for a few days, but thats about all. Now it feels like spring. (I went out without a jacket today and it was wonderful - Ok, I was cold in the shade, but still good.) The only bad part about this is that there will be no water this summer. The reservoirs were already really low, beyond half empty. Now with a winter without much snow (or rain) it doesn't make the future look bright.

Speaking of future...please remember the country I am currently living in. They are on the verge of some big changes. Ask for peace and safety during these uncertain times. And that a decision would be made before I leave in 10 days. I want to be here to celebrate!

Yes, I am going to the states for 2 weeks to meet my nephew. I am so excited.
